JOAN SEBASTIÁN

José Manuel Figueroa Figueroa, better known as Joan Sebastián, was born on April 8, 1951 in Juliantla, Guerrero and died at the age of 64 on july 13, 2015. He was a Mexican singer, songwriter and actor, who was known to the public under the nicknames ´´El Rey del Jaripeo, ´´El Poeta del Pueblo´´,´´El Poeta de Juliantla´´, and ´´El Huracán del Sur´´. When he was eight yeasr of age he entered an educational establishment in Guanajuato as a boarding student, where he took his first steps in the world of music; in fact, he modified the lyrics of the songs and composed musical verses. The first song that Joan Sebastián performed in public was Your path and mine by Vicente Fernández . He sang it in a singing competition in Cuautla de Morelos. He chose that song because before the contest the sang one of his songs to the organizers and they  told him to sing something more popular, so he chose to perform a single by Vicente Fernández, who was his mother ´s idol. At the age of 17 he began his musical career. Due to the diffculty of making a living as  a singer, he worked as an administrtive assistant at the Centro Vacacional Oaxtepec, a hotel and tourist complex in Morelos.

 

In 1968, the singer and actress Angélica María visited the resort of Oaxtepec, and while making a reservation at the hotel complex, she heard Sebastián sing some  songs, and convinced of his talent, she gave him the phone number of the musician and producer Eduardo Magallanes so thet he could get in touch. That year she went to Mexico City to contact Magallanes, but he was on a concert tour. Even so, she tried in vain to get a contract with the record label Discos Orfeón. After several months looking for a musical audition in the Mexican capital, she met the producer Chucho Rincón of the record company Discos Capitol, who at first did not take her into account, but later they would release Sebastián´s first song together. The recording he made in Mexicon changed his life forover. This first single, although it was a total failure, boosted his career; and, suddenly, a prometer called him to go sing in Texas offering him a thousand dollarsa day. At firs, he didn´t know what to do with the money and kapt it in foil packets in the refrigerator. He soon gave up his job as a car salesman. He was called from all sides to be hired as a musican. At that time, he met Mario Iván Ríos Castro de las Varas, who encouraged him to become a musician. 

           

In 1996, he was invited to star in the Mexican telenovelas Tú y yo alongside Maribel Guardia, in which he played Tomás Santillana, a popular singer - songwriter of grupera music in Mexico. He composed the musical score for the telenovela, whose songs were published by the Musart  record company. In 2001, he won two Premio Lo Nuestro awards in the categories of best grupera musi performe and best regional Mexican music  album for secreto de amor. The song secreto de amor reached seventh position on the Billboard magazine charts in the latin music category. In 2002 he published  Lo dijo el corazón and won his first Grammy  Awards, in 2003  afortunado was released. he was awarded the ASCAP (Society of American Composers) Award in 2002 and 2003 as composer of the year. In 2005 he released and album of various musical genres called Inventario; the following year he recorded a live album at the Auditorio Nacional and released another album entitled Más allá del sol. In 2007, he produced a ranchera musi album for Vicente Fernández with previously  unreleased song of his own, the title was para siempre. That same year, he released a new album called NO es de madera, from which the firs single Amor sin maquillaje was extracte, the central theme of the soap opera of the same name, broadcast by Televisa, in which he shared the lead role with Lucia Mendez . The singer announced his retirement from the stage in 2014, due to health problems, after it was discovered  that the bone cancer he was diagnosed with in 1998.
